A straight, double-edged Chinese sword traditionally associated with officers and skilled swordsmen, as opposed to the single-edged dao more common among rank-and-file fighters. Some Chinese pirate leaders and officers of the large South China Sea confederations would have carried a jian as a personal weapon. It required more training to use effectively than the simpler dao.
