An English flintlock variant featuring an external safety catch, or ‘dog,’ that held the cock at half-cock, popular among 17th-century sailors, buccaneers, and privateersmen. It offered improved safety when carried loaded in a ship’s cramped quarters. It was gradually replaced by true flintlock mechanisms by the early 18th century.
