Oruç Reis was an Ottoman corsair and the elder brother of Hayreddin Barbarossa, with whom he seized control of Algiers from local rulers in the early 16th century, establishing a base for Barbary corsair operations against Spanish and Christian shipping. He was killed in battle against Spanish forces in 1518, after which his brother Hayreddin succeeded him and expanded their holdings under Ottoman protection.
