Christopher Myngs

Portrait of Vice-Admiral Sir Christopher Myngs by Peter Lely, part of the Flagmen of Lowestoft series

Christopher Myngs was an English naval officer and buccaneer who led fleets of privateers against Spanish colonial towns in the Caribbean during the 1650s and 1660s. He raided settlements including Tolu, Santa Marta, and Cumana, and in 1662 captured and plundered Santiago de Cuba. In February 1663 he led the largest buccaneer fleet then assembled, some 1,400 men aboard 14 ships, to sack Campeche, with a young Henry Morgan serving among the crews. Knighted after the Battle of Lowestoft in 1665, he died from wounds received in the Four Days’ Battle the following year.
