Hayreddin Barbarossa was an Ottoman corsair and admiral who, with his brother Oruç, seized control of Algiers and later placed it under Ottoman sovereignty, becoming Kapudan Pasha (Grand Admiral) of the Ottoman fleet. He led major Ottoman naval victories over Christian European powers, including the 1538 Battle of Preveza. He died in Constantinople in 1546 and remains one of the most famous naval commanders of the era.
