Uluç Ali Reis was an Italian-born corsair captured and converted to Islam who rose to become Ottoman Beylerbey of Algiers and eventually Kapudan Pasha (Grand Admiral) of the Ottoman fleet. He commanded the Ottoman left wing at the 1571 Battle of Lepanto and was one of the few Ottoman commanders to escape the battle with his squadron largely intact. He died in Constantinople in 1587.
