Sambuk
The sambuk is a medium-to-large dhow distinguished by its square stern and characteristic curved prow, historically used for trade, pearling, and, when armed, as part of the raiding fleets operating along the Persian Gulf’s “Pirate Coast.”
-
Dhow
Dhow is the general term for traditional lateen-rigged sailing vessels of the Arabian Peninsula, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean. Fleets of armed dhows formed the naval strength of groups such as the Qawasim confederation of the “Pirate Coast,” whose vessels harassed British and other shipping through the Strait of Hormuz in the early 19th century.
